Jordan Love will not train without a new contract

The Detroit Lions have signed their starting quarterback Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract, with $170 million guaranteed. They have no worries about their quarterback contract heading into training camp. However, one of their division rivals does, at least to some extent.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has decided not to practice until a new contract is worked out. One important note to keep in mind is that this isn’t a complete walkout. Love reported to training camp with the other veterans on Sunday and will attend team meetings. He just won’t practice until his contract is sorted out. Love is entering a new contract year after signing a one-year extension last offseason that was effectively his option for a fifth year, only much cheaper. Love is only expected to make $10.5 million this season.

“I think we’re close,” Gutekunst said. Regarding Love’s absence from training, he added: “It’s not unexpected and we’ll work to make it happen. Hopefully he doesn’t miss too much time.”

Green Bay made the deal because there were lingering questions about Love and whether he was ready to replace Aaron Rodgers. Love emerged as one of the best quarterbacks last season, arguably his best in the second half of the season, leading the Packers to a playoff berth and a dominating road win over the No. 2 seed Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.

Love is now looking to be one of the best quarterbacks after the market exploded again in the offseason. Goff’s contract extension averages $53 million per year, while Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is tied with Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow at an average of $55 million. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa are also waiting for a new contract.

A deal seems imminent and things will settle quickly in Green Bay, but it is an interesting fact that Love will “hold on.”
