Garden State Equality Action Fund supports Kamala Harris for president

The national LGBTQ+ organization, a member of the Equality Federation, is the first national LGBTQ+ group to endorse Harris’ presidential candidacy

ASBURY PARK, NJ — The Garden State Equality Action Fund Board of Directors is proud to announce a special endorsement of Kamala Harris for President. As the first nationwide LGBTQ+ organization to endorse Kamala Harris for President, we believe her track record and unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ rights make her the ideal candidate to lead our nation forward.

Kamala Harris has consistently demonstrated her commitment to equality and protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ people. As a United States Senator, she co-sponsored the Equality Act, a landmark bill designed to provide LGBTQ+ people with comprehensive protections in areas such as employment, housing, and public facilities. She is a staunch supporter of marriage equality and a vocal advocate for transgender rights, including access to healthcare and the right to serve openly in the military.

“Kamala Harris has shown through her actions and words that she is a true ally of the LGBTQ+ community,” said Jeannine Frisby LaRue (she/her), chair of the Garden State Equality Action Fund. “As a lesbian and first and foremost Black woman, her commitment to equality and justice is as personal as mine, and we are confident that she will continue to fight for our rights as president.”

“As a Black woman who also attended Howard University, Kamala and I have a lot in common. We know that Black women have always served on the front lines in the fight for equality, and their resilience, strength and courage cannot be overstated,” said Brielle Winslow-Majette (she/her), deputy director of Garden State Equality.

“As a Latina and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know firsthand how important it is to have leaders who also represent diverse identities. We need a president who sees all of us and fights for all of us, and Kamala Harris is that leader,” said Laura Bustamante (she/her), board member of the Garden State Equality Action Fund. “For me, this support is heartfelt and urgent – ​​the lives and safety of transgender people
and people with nonbinary identities are at stake in this election,” said Jamie Zug (he/him), board member of the Garden State Equality Action Fund.

Governor Murphy has made New Jersey a national leader in LGBTQ+ equality with groundbreaking legislation and executive orders like the Transgender Equality Task Force, ending the criminalization of HIV and AIDS, and promoting safe school initiatives like inclusive instruction and resources. Kamala Harris shares a similar vision for inclusivity on a national level: her proven commitment to equality makes her the best choice to continue and expand the progress we’ve seen here in New Jersey.”
