Call for Composition Value Enhancement at the Ivors Academy Annual General Meeting: The Ivors Academy

News

In our 80th year, we invite industry professionals and fans around the world to support the Ivors Academy mission by becoming a Friend.

At our Annual General Meeting, the Ivors Academy invited supporters from around the world to join its mission to empower, support and promote songwriters and composers by becoming Friends. This marks a significant milestone in the Academy’s 80-year history and creates an expanded community that values the talent and craft of songwriters and composers.

The Friends of the Ivors Academy program is for individuals who are passionate about supporting the mission of the Ivors Academy, but are not songwriters or composers themselves. By becoming Friends, supporters such as fans, industry professionals and politicians contribute to the work and mission of the Academy. Friends will help ensure that songwriters and composers continue to thrive and create the music that enriches our lives.

In his speech, Roberto Neri, Managing Director of Ivors Academy, stressed the importance of this new initiative:

“We want everyone who loves music and appreciates songwriters and composers, anywhere in the world, to become part of the Ivors Academy and support our mission to protect and promote our writers. The sustainability and success of our members is the foundation for the entire music industry. If songwriters and composers are not successful, ultimately the rest of the industry will suffer. Therefore, it is not only in our interest to protect and promote our members, but in the interest of the entire music industry.”

Speaking at the Ivors Academy Annual General Meeting, Roberto also outlined the organisation’s priorities to empower, protect and enable its members. Roberto said:

We must increase industry and public recognition of the importance of composition, fight practices that devalue it, advocate for better royalty sharing and push the government to promote the interests and intellectual property of our members, which will benefit the future of the music industry. We must also champion the importance of arts and culture in education, wellbeing and economic growth across the UK, enforce the need for songwriters and composers to have direct consent and control over their rights in AI, and denounce coercive measures to ensure our members retain their rights.”
