Eminem used AI to recreate Slim Shady’s voice and image for “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”

In the picture for The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace) Slim marked his return with the album cut “Houdini,” appearing seemingly in the flesh alongside Marshall Mathers. In the video, young Shady travels back in time to the present, and he and Em walk back to back, singing lyrics from the 2002 song “Without Me Part 2.”

“Guess who’s back, back again?/Shady’s back, tell a friend,” raps Eminem in the intro.

But how did he manage to make Slim Shady – both vocally and visually – The death of Slim Shady— back to life after more than 20 years? According to BillboardDamien Scott, a native of Detroit, used AI and the company Metaphysic.

Scott writes that the artificial intelligence company, founded in 2021, “offers a set of tools that artists can use to create and manage digital versions of themselves, which they can then edit and use for their own projects or license to third parties for films, television shows or other commercial projects.”

Metaphysic Pro is tailored for creatives and artists and is designed to help them build a “portfolio of high-quality data assets to help you create your AI, voice and performance,” the website says. This offering seemed like a perfect fit for Eminem, who can use the platform to protect his image and likeness as well as for his own creative endeavors.

Scott points out that artists can “protect their image and likeness from the coming onslaught of artificial intelligence” by “registering with Metaphysic to build a database of videos of their face, voice, and performances from any point in their career.” Metaphysic also helps you maintain control over your AI self through paper licensing agreements.

Last week, Complex opened pop-up shops in LA and London for The death of Slim Shady. Below you will find some reports.
