Much more than just books for sale

Don’t let the name fool you, the Spring Mini Book Sale offers much more than “just” books – literally thousands of items including books, audiobooks, movies, CDs and DVDs will be on sale. And since these items range in price from $0.50 to $2.00, you can stock up without breaking the bank.

Details of the EVPL Summer Book Sale

The two-day sale will take place on Saturday, August 3rd from 10am to 8pm and Sunday, August 4th from noon to 3pm at Washington Square Mall on Evansville’s east side. It’s free to visit and browse, but you are asked to bring your own bag or box for anything you purchase. A credit card payment option is available with a minimum purchase of $10.

Shopping for a good cause

The sale is more than just an opportunity to buy all the things I just mentioned. The sale serves as the primary fundraising event for the EVPL Foundation. Money raised at this sale and similar sales throughout the year will be used to support youth programs and services, the Community Lecture Series, new technology, collections, staff engagement, and special library projects and initiatives.

See how downtown Evansville has changed over the years

I find it fascinating to look back at how things used to be. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I live in the present day. It’s pretty convenient that we can get any question answered in seconds or order virtually anything we want or need and have it delivered to our doorstep. But it’s also fun to see how things have evolved around us. As an Evansville native who has spent a fair amount of time in downtown Evansville (that’s where the station is), I’ve always appreciated the older architecture of the buildings in the area. So I dug into the Willard Library Archives to see what some of these areas look like now compared to back then. Some have changed a little, some quite a lot, and some don’t even exist anymore. Check it out.

Then and now – Evansville’s Washington Square Mall through the years

Evansville is home to many unique buildings, including the first enclosed shopping mall in Indiana. Yes, our very own Washington Square Mall was the hottest place when it opened in 1963. Walking through the mall today, you would never guess how vibrant the stores were even in the 1980s. Enjoy this walk down memory lane I’ve put together, and maybe one day new life will spring up at 5011 Washington Ave.
