Today is the last day Michiganders can register online or by mail for the August 6 primary election. Eligible residents can still register in person until Election Day.

Michigan requires its residents to be 18 years old and a U.S. citizen on Election Day to vote, and not currently serving a prison or jail sentence. For Michigan residents who are unsure of their registration status, the state’s online voting portal offers an easy way to check:

  1. Visit Michigan’s voter information portal.
  2. Choose from several different identity verification methods.
  3. View your registration status, see the location and hours of your polling place, take a look at a sample ballot, and more.

The primaries decide which candidates from each party will run in the general election in November for the U.S. Senate, Congress, the state House of Representatives, and some local elections.

Voting rules vary widely from state to state, particularly when it comes to primaries. In Michigan, primaries are open, meaning voters choose their party’s candidates on election day, but this is private and does not result in registration with that party. However, voters may only vote for one party’s primary candidates: slates where a voter chooses candidates from both parties are not allowed.

To register online, Michigan residents who have verified their eligibility can go to https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/registervoter and complete an application by today, July 22. To register by mail, Michigan residents can download an application online or pick it up at any clerk’s office and mail or scan the completed form to their local clerk today.

To register in person, you must bring proof of residency: Government-issued documents such as a Michigan driver’s license or identification card, recent utility bills or bank statements are accepted. Both physical and digital copies are acceptable. Registration will be accepted at your local office anytime until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
