A teenager was struck by lightning near the summit of Germany’s highest mountain and died.

The 18-year-old German had climbed the Zugspitze with two other men on Sunday afternoon when the tragedy occurred.

They had taken the cable car to the top and then continued to the summit, a climb of about 260 feet from a terrace.

As the men descended from the summit, lightning struck repeatedly and the 18-year-old suffered a fatal electric shock, police said.

Rescue efforts were made difficult by the storm, officials added.

The Zugspitze is 2,866 meters above sea level and is located on the border between Germany and Austria.
