The Association of Opening Voice Foods on the viral Roti Aoka, which allegedly uses dangerous preservatives

JAKARTA – Roti Aoka is currently going viral on social media due to rumors that it contains dangerous preservatives. Netizens are busy discussing it, both those who believe it and those who don’t.

This bread has a longer expiration date than other brands of bread. While other brands only last a few days, Aoka can last up to a few months.

This also raises the question of how Aoka bread can have a longer expiration date.

There are rumors that Aoka bread contains dangerous preservatives such as sodium dehydroacetate or SDN. This ingredient is believed to have harmful effects on the body in the long term.

According to VOI’s search of the X-timeline on Monday, July 22, many netizens discussed the Aoka bread. Some are against it and believe that the content is dangerous, like some of these netizens.

“I bought this bread once, then never again because my stomach was a bit sensitive. It turns out there were indications of the use of dangerous preservatives, so this bread lasted for months. On the other hand, local bread SMEs were undermined by the products of the foreign-owned bread company,” wrote the account @Ridhiktifaxx.

“I used to buy it a lot because it made me feel good, but over time I started to feel nauseous when I ate it. Plus the filling made my mouth even worse. Now I have never eaten Aoka brand bread,” said a tweet from the account @coupxx.

The Indonesian Beverage Manufacturers Association (Gapmmi) also spoke out. Gapmmi General Chairman Adhi S. Lukman confirmed that sodium dehydroacetate or SDN is not a food preservative.

“The (preservative) sodium dehydroacetate, right, is not on the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) positive list of preservatives,” Adhi said at a meeting at Gelora Senayan Artotel in Jakarta on Monday, July 22.

Adhi added that the food industry has so far only used benzoate and propionate based preservatives.

“There are all kinds of things, benzoate is still allowed, usually when bread is propionate. It is allowed, but everything has a limit. It cannot exceed the established limits,” he said.

He was of the view that the issue of Aoka bread itself was currently being handled by BPOM and that BPOM would provide clarity later.

“I myself have not received detailed information from BPOM, but if it is true that there is content that is not allowed, BPOM will of course immediately take security measures so as not to endanger consumers,” he said.

In addition, Adhi also mentioned that the manufacturer of Aoka bread, namely PT Indonesia Bakery Family based in Bandung, West Java, is not registered as a member of Gapmmi.

“Incidentally, this new company has not joined us. We will try to contact them to join, as the association basically wants to encourage all members to comply with the existing regulations,” he added.
