“Godforsaken” Barstow at the center of a horror comic series

The Dark Horse Comics series “Barstow” describes the city in the “center of the Mojave Desert” as “a crossroads between hell and the underworld.”

The creators of the horror comedy series are award-winning writers and filmmakers David Ian and Rebekah McKendry, best known for their work on the films “Glorious” and “All the Creatures Were Stirring,” according to Fangoria magazine.

Something dark and demonic

The comic, which will be released in November, focuses on agent Miranda Diaz, who is on the trail of a missing agent in the “godforsaken” town of Barstow.

The authors explain that Diaz is searching for a missing agent, a man she has never met, “and yet her name was the only clue he left.”

“Something dark… something demonic… lurks beneath this strange city, but can Miranda unravel the mystery before all hell breaks loose?” the authors ask.

Inspired by unusual desert locations

“As avid readers of horror comics, we are thrilled to be working on our first comic book series with the legendary Dark Horse Comics,” McKendry said in a written statement. “This whole experience is a dream come true.”

The authors said they first came up with the idea for the comic late Sunday evening on a trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

“We fell in love with the wild stretch between the two cities, especially the area around the Mojave Desert and all the towns in between,” the writers explained. “Although we used the name Barstow, our town in the series is a mix of all the quirky desert towns we’ve seen in that area.”

These “quirky towns” on or near Interstate 15 in the High Desert might include Oak Hills, Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Lenwood, Hinkley, Yermo, Baker or Jean.

Exit 666 to Barstow

The comic’s lettering will be done by Justin Birch, while Eisner Award winner Tyler Jenkins will provide the illustrations and color for the series, reports the Daily Dead.

The comic cover shows a woman in a suit whose body is ripped open from her neck to her left leg.

Instead of bloody internal organs, the woman’s interior appears to show a creature’s single eye, a river, and a waterfall.

The woman is standing next to cacti and a roadside sign that says “Exit 666” and “Barstow.”

Reader Jess Phoenix congratulated Rebekah McKendry on her upcoming comic on Facebook, saying, “After spending way too much time in the real Barstow, I have to compliment you on the accuracy of the cover.”

Henry Henrich, owner of Comic Cult HD bookstore in Hesperia, said the comic was published by Dark Horse, “so that has a certain credibility.” He added that books and comics with stories centered around the High Desert are few and far between.

“Barstow,” issue #1 of 4, hits stores November 20. Pre-orders are available at your local comic shop for $4.99.
