Hunter praises his father Joe Biden’s ‘unconditional love’, Jill shares her heartfelt reaction after the president’s exit: 10-point update

Shortly after announcing that he was ending his candidacy, Biden endorsed Kamala Harris. The president’s decision is shocking, as he had until now claimed he had no plans to drop out of the race. He had also reportedly vowed to run for a second debate against Trump.

Here is a 10-point update on the developments:

  1. Joe Biden announces his exit: In an open letter, Biden wrote: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve you as President. And while I intend to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I step down and focus exclusively on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
  2. Joe Biden supports Kamala Harris: Biden followed up his letter with another post endorsing Harris as his successor. “My very first decision as a party nominee in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as my running mate. And it was the best decision I made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement of Kamala becoming our party’s nominee this year. Democrats – it’s time to come together and defeat Trump. Let’s do it,” he wrote.
  3. Kamala Harris releases statement: Harris later broke her silence, saying she was “honored to have the president’s support” and praising Biden for his “selfless and patriotic act.” “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. “We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win,” she said.
  4. Jill Biden’s heartfelt response: Although Jill has not yet commented on her husband’s decision, she shared Biden’s open letter to X and captioned it with a heart emoji.
  5. Barack Obama breaks his silence: Obama released a statement praising Biden but not endorsing Harris, instead saying Democrats would choose an unnamed “outstanding candidate.” The former president heaped praise on Biden, saying, “Through his policies and example, Joe reminded us who we are at our best – a country committed to old-fashioned values like trust and honesty, kindness and hard work; a country that believes in democracy, the rule of law and accountability; a country that insists that everyone, no matter who they are, has a voice and deserves a chance at a better life.”
  6. Hunter Biden praises his father: Biden’s controversial son Hunter praised his father after the announcement. Hunter said of Biden in a statement: “Over the course of my life, I have watched him bear the pain of countless ordinary Americans, to whom he gave his personal phone number because he wanted them to call him when they were suffering. When their last hope was slipping away.” He concluded by saying: “Thank you, Mr. President. I love you, Dad.”
  7. The White House announces which agenda items Joe Biden wants to complete: White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates has touted the remaining agenda items Biden hopes to complete before the end of his term. “President Biden inherited an economy in freefall, a skyrocketing violent crime rate, and frayed alliances from his predecessor. He has turned that around, delivering the world’s strongest economic growth and lowest violent crime rate in nearly 50 years while making NATO bigger than ever,” Bates said in a statement to the New York Post. “He looks forward to finishing his term delivering more historic results for the American people. That includes continuing to cut costs, create jobs, and protect Social Security while opposing the MAGAnomics agenda that would worsen inflation and push us into recession. And he will continue to fight to protect Americans’ freedoms from radical abortion bans and attacks on the rule of law,” he added.
  8. Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff makes a statement: In an X-post, Emhoff thanked the Bidens for their “friendship and support.” “I am deeply grateful to @POTUS and @FLOTUS for their years of friendship and support. President Biden is a true patriot who leads our nation with honesty, decency and integrity. Together with @VP, they have fought tirelessly for families and communities and cared for Americans across our country. I am so proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their leadership,” he wrote.
  9. Donald Trump attacks Joe Biden: In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Biden was “not fit to be president” and “certainly not fit to hold the office.” “He only got to the office of president through lies, fake news, and not leaving his basement. Everyone around him, including his doctor and the media, knew he was unfit to be president, and he wasn’t – and now look what he’s done to our country: millions of people coming across our border, completely unchecked and unchecked, many from prisons, mental institutions, and record numbers of terrorists. We will suffer greatly under his presidency, but we will repair the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote.
  10. Who will now receive Joe Biden’s remaining campaign funds? The Republican National Committee has considered the possibility of lawsuits to ensure that Biden campaign funds are not transferred, but the Federal Election Commission is divided on whether Harris should receive the $96 million that remains in the account.

FEC Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum believes Harris is entitled to the money because she is already registered as a member of the campaign committee. “In my view, that is not an open question,” Lindenbaum told the New York Times.

“It’s absolutely clear,” Lindenbaum added. “If Kamala Harris is the Democratic presidential candidate, she can control all the money in the account.”

The Biden-Harris ActBlue account now says “Donate to Elect Kamala Harris.” The “Biden for President” account has also filed paperwork with the FEC to rename itself “Harris for President.”

FEC Chairman Sean Cooksey said in an interview he was unsure what would happen to the funds. “This is an unprecedented event, and it should come as no surprise that this is not an easy legal question to resolve,” Cooksey said, according to the New York Post.
