Taylor Swift attacked Donald Trump for “fueling the fires of white supremacy and racism”

Taylor Swift attacked Donald Trump for “fueling the fires of white supremacy and racism”

After President Donald Trump tweeted that protesters in Minnesota should be shot, Taylor Swift directly challenged him. Although Swift has remained silent about her political leanings in the past, this move comes after she refused to endorse a presidential candidate in 2016 and came under criticism for staying silent when Trump “blatantly insulted women and people of color,” according to Splinter.

In 2018, she campaigned for the Democrats in her home state of Tennessee during the midterm elections. However, Swift’s comment about President Trump is her most overt political move yet (though it’s not her first jab at him). It refers not only to a specific tweet, but also to his actions during his presidency.

“After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence,” she wrote before tagging the president. “‘When the looting starts, the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November.”

Swift’s comments came after Trump tweeted in the wake of protests over the police killing of George Floyd, threatening to send in National Guard troops and adding: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

Swift is not the only one to criticize Trump’s choice of words. Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and even Twitter itself also expressed their opinion. The social platform even went so far as to classify Trump’s tweet as a violation of its rules on glorifying violence.

Trump famously stated that he liked Swift’s music 25% less when she went public with her support campaign in Tennessee.

“Let’s say I like Taylor’s music about 25% less now, OK?” he said in October 2018.

Following his comments, Swift said The guard that she felt Trump was manipulating the American public. “We are a democracy – at least we should be – where you can disagree, have dissenting opinions and debate. I really believe (Trump) thinks this is an autocracy,” she said. “(It) is manipulating the American public by telling them, ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.'”
