Mason nominated for the 2024 US Paralympics team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – Former student and athlete at Eastern Michigan University Brittni Mason was named to the United States Paralympic Team for the second time in her career, the United States Olympic/Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced on Sunday, July 21.

Eastern Track & Field is now sending two former student athletes to Paris as Mason and Triple Jumper Donald Scott will represent Team USA at the respective Olympic/Paralympic Games.

Mason’s selection is the second of her career, having previously competed at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. She won medals in all three of her events, taking silver in both the 100m (11.97) and 200m (25.00) T47, before taking gold in a world-record-breaking 4x100m mixed relay as Mason’s team crossed the finish line in 45.52 seconds.

“I am so happy for Brittni and everything she has worked so hard for. Brittni has now qualified for the Paralympics twice and that says a lot because her continued work ethic and passion for the sport is on display at the highest level. I am excited to see how she does and will be cheering her on,” said the co-director of cross country/track and field and head coach of women’s track and field. Chris Best.

She is the first two-time Paralympian in the program’s history. Her selection came after a standout performance at the 2024 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials, held Thursday through Saturday, July 18-20, at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida. Mason placed first in all three races, first winning the 100m open distance in 12.18 seconds on Friday night. Mason took home two gold medals on Saturday, first the 100m T46 in 12.21 seconds and then the 200m T46 in 25.78 seconds.

Mason was named to the All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) four times during her time at Ypsilanti, earning three first-team and one second-team selection. She played a crucial role in the 4x100m relay team that set a record at the 2019 NCAA East Regional Championships on May 23-25, clocking a time of 44.65. Also during the 2019 outdoor season, Mason’s 4x100m relay team took first place, breaking a record at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a time of 45.04.

Mason was also an outstanding student in the classroom, earning five Academic All-MAC honors throughout her career as well as a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete award (2018), an award given to the top All-MAC and Academic All-MAC honorees in each conference sport.
