“We support the call to declare war on war” – Australian health workers support the rally on July 24
The Australian Health Workers Rank-and-File Committee (HWRFC) met this month and unanimously passed a resolution, published below, supporting the call by the Socialist Equality Party, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) and the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC) for a demonstration on July 24 in Washington DC against the US visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The meeting was attended by doctors, nurses, geriatric and disability care workers, and hospital workers. Discussions focused on the horrific impact of the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza, which according to recent reports has killed nearly 200,000 Palestinians, and the link between the wars of US imperialism and its allies abroad and the government’s increasing attacks on public health, education and other social services at home.
Health workers discussed the Albanese Labor government’s increasing attacks on various aspects of health care and the Labor government in Victoria’s state of Victoria’s order to public hospital administrators to cut their annual operating budgets by hundreds of millions of dollars.
This meeting of the Health Workers Rank & File Committee (Australia) supports the July 24 demonstration in Washington DC against the genocidal war in Gaza and the US Congress’s decision to invite war criminal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak there. We call on all who are able to attend the event, in as many different ways as possible.
The aim of the demonstration, called by the Socialist Equality Party (SEP), the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) and the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC), is not to ask Congress to change its policies, but to build a mass working-class movement against genocide and its cause, capitalism – a system in which health and life are subordinated to private profit.
The fact that the genocide in Gaza was supported, financed and armed by the major capitalist powers is a warning to the working class. The imperialist powers have made it clear that there are no “red lines” that they will not cross in their struggle to maintain their hegemony.
Over the past nine months, virtually the entire health system in Gaza has been destroyed. Hundreds of health workers have been targeted, tortured and murdered as part of the Zionist project of ethnic cleansing of Gaza.
As representatives of health professionals representing a wide range of health services, we support the campaign to develop a fight in defence of humanity against the increasingly callous disregard for human life and health.
In Australia and around the world, millions are trying to find a way to stop the criminal madness, but are being blocked by the organizations they have turned to for help. The unions and professional associations are suppressing the independent action of workers when they do not openly oppose the protests against the genocide, and are looking for every possible reason why workers cannot use their social power to stop the crimes against humanity.
The Australian Labor Government, together with the US Congress and political elites around the world, continues to support the barbaric genocide in Gaza. We say: No support for the genocide and down with its defenders!
We stand with all those who oppose the ever-widening war in the Middle East, in Ukraine and the preparations for a conflagration in China, and fight to unite the workers of all countries for a common socialist future. We support the call to declare war on war!
