According to several employees of the pharmacy chain, Rite Aid plans to close all of its stores in Michigan and transfer the prescriptions to Walgreens.

Free Press calls and emails to Rite Aid corporate representatives were not returned, nor were calls and emails to Walgreens corporate representatives.

The closures will take place in waves over the summer and begin as early as July 1, said workers who were not authorized to speak about the company’s plans.

Since filing for bankruptcy in October 2023, Rite Aid has been closing stores across the country and in Michigan.

Rite Aid has more than 180 stores in Michigan.

Earlier this week, the Free Press reported that bankruptcy court documents showed Rite Aid would close another 12 stores in Michigan and 15 in Ohio.

But Rite Aid pharmacy staff have told customers and the Free Press that all Michigan stores will be closed. Prescriptions will automatically be sent to Walgreens stores unless customers make other arrangements.

Letters explaining how to proceed with prescriptions will be sent to customers at a later date.

The Free Press has contacted Rite Aid stores across the state for information on the closures. Employees said they learned of the impending closures earlier this week.

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October citing declining sales, mounting debt and lawsuits accusing the company – and other pharmacies – of illegally issuing prescriptions that contributed to a nationwide opioid epidemic.
