Why Love Island USA is the best reality show of the year

Why Love Island USA is the best reality show of the year

Everyone is talking about season 6 of Love Island USA. The series has been running since 2019, but it has reached new heights this season, breaking viewership records and taking over the lives of reality TV fans over the past few weeks. With the finale just around the corner, let’s take a moment to appreciate the groundbreaking show of the summer.

That’s why Love Island USA is currently the best reality show on television…

Love Island USA is fun!

What I particularly love about Love Island USA is the super playful tone of the show. There are a lot of emotional moments, but also a lot of comedic ones. Scottish comedian Iain Stirling narrates the show, which helps keep the show lighthearted and not too serious. He likes to poke fun at the contestants, whether it’s their intellect or their lack of communication skills.

Some reality shows like Love is Blind or The Bachelor tend to take themselves too seriously. Love Island USA seems to know what it is and what viewers want to see. The show creates breathtaking drama while being silly and mindlessly entertaining.

Love Island USA has a great host

Season 6 kicked off with a brand new host. Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix joined the villa this year to guide the Islanders on their quest for love. Her involvement has transformed the show. Reality TV hosts often feel out of place. They’re usually actors or working hosts who cash their checks and don’t seem too involved in the drama. Ariana offers something new. Not only is she a huge fan of the show, but she’s also a reality TV veteran. She puts herself at the center of the action. Ari has hot takes and isn’t afraid to spill the beans on Love Island: Aftersun. In a recent interview with The Washington Post, she talked about her new job.

“I’m a fan and I’m involved in everything that’s happening. I’m really interested,” she said.

Not only did she excel as a host, but she also brought a whole new audience to the show. VPR fans tuned in to see her, but stayed for the drama.

“I’ve heard from a lot of people that they hadn’t seen the show before, but they started watching because I was the host and they stayed because the show was so great,” she said.

The girls are united on Love Island USA

It never ceases to amaze me how united the women on Love Island are. Maybe I’m being cynical, but it amazes me how supportive they are of one another, especially as they date the same group of men. Every now and then there’s a new bombshell who causes drama and breaks the ‘girl code’.

But more often, the women are a constant source of love and support for one another. Ben Thursby-Palmer, executive producer of the show, spoke to the Washington Post about this season’s girl power, calling them “the Spice Girls of Love Island.”

“They’re a really diverse group of people, but they really support each other,” he told the outlet. Ariana also shared her thoughts, telling the publication that the friendships between the women make the show better.

“That closeness makes the stakes high when you see dramatic moments or when there’s a reunion and you’re not sure who’s going home. That’s really important for everyone involved,” she said. “I think that feeling transfers to the audience when they see them, and it feels like all of those things really matter.”

Love Island USA is edited in real time

Love Island is edited in real time, giving the show an immersive feel. Editors feverishly sift through hours of footage to produce 6 dramatic episodes per week. According to The Wrap, Love Island USA’s editorial team consists of “around 50 editors and 20 producers.”

Executive producer Claudine Parrish spoke to the outlet about the show’s unconventional editing style. “We cut it as it comes in,” she said. “The islanders wake up (and) the control room (will) commission scenes based on what happens. They’ll label them, like ‘boys making breakfast for the girls,’ and 15 minutes after it happens, it’s in our edits — an editor is on it and makes a scene out of it.”

This unique approach makes the show feel less artificial. Editors discover the islanders’ stories and behavior at roughly the same time as viewers.
