Tampa Bay Rays cause a sensation with a Donald Trump-themed celebration

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 6-4 on Sunday afternoon to win Game 3 of the series at Yankee Stadium. The Rays hit four home runs to extend their record to 50-49 with the win, while the Yankees fell to 59-42 with the loss.

The Rays are now just 4.5 games away from the third and final wildcard spot, while the Yankees are 2.0 games behind the division.

The most interesting part of the day, however, had nothing to do with the Rays’ improvement in performance, but rather with a celebration.

As he reached second base, infielder Taylor Walls put his hand in the air and said “fight, fight, fight,” which is most likely an ode to former President Donald Trump’s reaction when he was shot in Pennsylvania last weekend.

The Rays weren’t the only team to spark a Trump-inspired celebration on Sunday, as the St. Louis Cardinals appeared to do the same. Coincidentally, this happened on the same day that current President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

It seems certain that such celebrations will provoke strong reactions on both political camps, with the Rays and Cardinals likely becoming favorites of the right and enemies of the left.

The question will be how long teams will continue these celebrations and whether anyone in Major League Baseball will step in and try to keep political references off the field.

The Rays and Yankees finish the series on Monday afternoon.
