Michigan Governor Whitmer praises Biden as a “great public servant” after he withdraws from the 2024 presidential campaign

(CBS) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement after President Biden announced that he would quit the 2024 presidential election on Sunday.

Following Mr Biden’s announcement, Whitmer made the following statement to X:

“President Biden is a great public servant who knows better than anyone what it takes to defeat Donald Trump. His remarkable work to lower prescription drug costs, fix the damn roads, bring supply chains home, address climate change, and ensure America remained a global leader for decades will go down in history. My job in this election will remain the same: to do everything I can to elect Democrats and stop Donald Trump, a convicted felon whose agenda of raising costs for families, banning abortion nationwide, and abusing the power of the White House to pay his own bills is completely wrong for Michigan.”

Whitmer joined other Reaction from Michigan authorities about the president’s withdrawal from the race.

The announcement comes after many Democratic lawmakers expressed concern about Biden’s health after his appearance in the presidential debate. Despite calls for his resignation, Whitmer remained unwavering in his support throughout his campaign.

This also comes a month before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Within hours of announcing his withdrawal, Mr Biden supported Vice President Kamala Harris as top candidate to replace him. While Whitmer has not officially announced her support, other Michigan lawmakers have announced their support for the vice president.

In his Statement on SundayKildee said Harris is “uniquely qualified to serve as president of the United States.”

CBS News reported on a list of lawmakers, including Whitmer, who could be considered for the Democratic nomination and leading candidates for vice president. Although the governor’s name has been mentioned frequently since the debate, she has repeatedly stated that she does not want to run for president and even reiterated her role in that election on Sunday.
