Biden’s resignation as candidate: Democrats are making history for the wrong reasons

There is a harsh reality that Democrats, progressives and liberals are unwilling to face: History books will remember that the party that ousted their president was not the party whose candidate was convicted of a crime or that said from day one that he would behave like a dictator.

The Republican National Convention was like something out of the Prime Video series “The Boys.” Before Donald Trump took the stage, overdramatic ’80s rock was followed by a rock/hip-hop performance by Bud Light fan Kid Rock, then a pro-wrestling-style promo from UFC President and CEO Dana White.

Sadly, such behavior may not only be a reflection of the Republican Party. It may soon be a reflection of the rest of America. President Joe Biden resigned after everyone – voters, supporters and donors – urged him to do so.

Opinion

They will see this progress as progress despite the billions of dollars in student loans that Biden has forgiven. They will think that a younger president is a step in the right direction, rather than remembering Biden’s efforts to reduce inflation and create millions of jobs while keeping the unemployment rate at the lowest level ever in U.S. history.

Democrats are setting the wrong precedent

Faith in America and the institutions that defined our country has waned, no one disputes that. What should be up for debate, however, is the Democrats’ hasty, foolish push to seek a new candidate less than four months before one of the most important elections in our country’s history.

That may be enough time to mobilize a new candidate, but it is not enough time to launch a whole new campaign that must win the attention and trust of millions of Americans. Running this campaign under these circumstances is a burden and a huge struggle.

Biden and Kamala Harris knew how to beat Trump. Coming together showed more strength than switching candidates so close to the election. That has never happened before, and other Democratic favorites, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and California Governor Gavin Newsom, are untested in national politics.

Elections aren’t just about a candidate. They’re about delivering messages that resonate with voters. Biden had a track record that earned Democrats’ support. Instead of running against Trump, Democrats ran against Biden. Forcing him to step down sends the message that Democrats care more about social media noise and polls than substance and results.

Biden administration must continue its work

Biden is old at 82, but it takes an administration to bring about change, and what his Cabinet has accomplished, from infrastructure to Covid relief, deserves a second term.

It’s the bottom of the ninth inning and you don’t take your relief pitcher out with three outs remaining. For my Swifties, if it’s the last song of the Eras concert and you don’t play “Teardrops on My Guitar,” play “Fortnight” or “Lavender Haze.”

Whatever you say about Trump, Republicans are completely locked into him and have been for four years or more. It’s scary. They see him as someone who will give them what they want.

The fact that liberals are not putting the same energy into Biden after four years of successful leadership shows that they did not like him from the start. His message of decency did not resonate.

Democrats must be honest and say what they are doing when they vote out a president with a solid track record while a man unfit for the presidency easily controls his party.

This is what happened to Democrats on reproductive rights. The left didn’t believe Roe v. Wade would ever be overturned, while conservatives and Republicans said, “Look at this.”

The Democrats have nothing to complain about now. They got what they wanted. But does that mean they will give up their pessimism?

That’s America. Elections are won by standing behind ideals and beliefs, and lost by giving in to fear and whining.
