Ryan Reynolds talks about his meeting with Madonna to license a song for Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine Star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy discuss exactly what it took to get one of Madonna’s biggest hits for the film.




According to People, Levy explained that acquiring the rights to the Queen of Pop’s “Like a Prayer” actually involved “a personal visit with Madonna.” Levy noted that the visit was necessary for the filmmaker to show Madonna exactly where in the film “Like a Prayer” would end and to get her blessing to include the 1989 hit in the upcoming film.

The latest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine revealed one of the many upcoming cameos.


Reynolds explained: “It was a big deal to ask for it and an even bigger deal to use it. We went and met with her and showed her how it was used, where and why.” Reynolds added, “She gave a great commentary. She looked at it, and I kid you not (she said), ‘This is what you have to do.’ And damn if she wasn’t exactly right.”

Deadpool and Wolverine brings Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool, back together with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Although the eponymous duo are undoubtedly the stars of the film, Deadpool and Wolverine will also feature a number of other fan-favorite characters, as the film is intended to serve as an effective reboot of Marvel’s mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke about this shift, promising fans: “There are a lot of great X-Men Signs in the Deadpool and Wolverine Film.” Feige also stated: “As we did when we signed the agreement with Sony for Spider-Manyou’ll probably see a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before.”

Executive producer Wendy Jacobson also promised fans that Deadpool and Wolverine wouldn’t mince words when it came to poking fun at Marvel Studios itself. “The truth is, nothing is off limits to Deadpool, including himself,” Jacobson said. “And when it comes to poking fun at something… he never pulls down. There’s a real egalitarianism in that… Kevin Feige once said, we were talking about a particular line and he said, ‘The way I see it, it’s a real honor to be mocked by Deadpool.'”

Deadpool and Wolverine will be in theaters on July 26th.
