Wonder Woman reveals a shocking love story about her infamous arch-nemesis

The following contains major spoilers for Wonder Woman No. 10, now available from DC Comics.

Wonder Woman’s recent fight for her life has revealed the depth of her love for one of her oldest and most famous enemies.

Wonder Woman #10 finds the titular heroine after she has been dropped off in the wilderness of a small, isolated island in the middle of the ocean. Of course, Wonder Woman’s enemies have not left her entirely to herself, but have isolated her with none other than the cheetah, who they had hoped would tear the Amazon to pieces. While a fierce battle does indeed ensue, nearly costing Wonder Woman her life, it is followed by a rare moment of tenderness and compassion, in which both hero and villain discover the previously unspoken love they feel for each other.

The current Cheetah, Barbara Ann Minerva, is the latest in a long line of characters who have taken up the mantle to do battle with Wonder Woman. The first, Priscilla Rich, was introduced back in 1943. Wonder Woman #6 in the story “Wonder Woman and the Cheetah” by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter. While Priscilla and her successor Deborah Domaine relied on their cheetah costumes and various other accoutrements to enhance themselves, Barbara is instead empowered by the ancient god Urzkartaga.

Over the past year, Wonder Woman has been subjected to all manner of trials, tests and torments at the hands of the Sovereign, the secret king of the United States who abhors everything Diana stands for. Leading the attack against Wonder Woman was none other than Sarge Steel, a former private investigator turned anti-hero who first appeared in the 1964 story “File 101: The Case of the Pearls of Death” (by Joe Gill and Dick Giordano, from the pages of Sarge Steel #1). In recent years, Steel has taken on the role of an Amanda Waller-type villain who enjoys waging war against superheroes with the support of the U.S. government.

The only thing standing between the DC Universe and total annihilation is a superhero team consisting entirely of imps.

Before being forced to face the Cheetah, Wonder Woman was locked in a cell for months without food, water, or any sign of the outside world. This caused her to experience vivid hallucinations of Steve Trevor, to whom she confided that she had officially reached the point of absolute despair. Although Diana knew from the beginning that the time she spent with this version of Trevor was not real, it still provided her with the catharsis she needed to continue to persevere against the Sovereign and his plans.
