Shane Lowry had no problem uncovering the truth behind the famous Rory McIlroy incident
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy won the Zurich Classic at their first attempt as a duo earlier this year – and celebrated with a joint lunch in New Orleans
Shane Lowry knows the magnetic “Rory McIlroy effect” all too well after the two received a rousing standing ovation as they left a New Orleans diner after a “Drink in the Sun.”
The Irish golf duo, who decided to play together for this year’s Zurich Classic after tough negotiations, triumphed in Louisiana on their debut as partners.
Despite his own influence in the golf world, Lowry acknowledged that the cheers they received as they left the French restaurant were likely in honor of McIlroy, and attributed the applause to something specific that had happened during their meal.
“It was pretty fancy, but not really. It was right off Bourbon Street,” Lowry told the Fore Play podcast at the Open, recalling the finest dining experience. “We got a standing ovation when we left the restaurant; well, I was with Rory.”

When asked about the reason for the applause, he admitted: “It was for Rory. He ordered a very expensive bottle of wine (laughs). So yeah, that was probably it!”
McIlroy, 35, had previously said it was his idea to ask Lowry to join him after his regular partner Padraig Harrington moved up to the Champions Tour. Their partnership has proved successful after winning the Zurich title.
McIlory announced that he was ready to support fellow countryman Lowry in his quest for a second triumph at the Open Championship at Royal Troon.
He said: “I can’t wait to watch this weekend. He’s enjoying these conditions. He’s motivated for that more than anything else. I’m looking forward to cheering him on and hopefully getting his second Jug.”
The Northern Irishman’s comments came after he missed the cut at Royal Troon. McIlroy’s dry spell has now lasted almost 10 years and he plans to take a break from golf after a difficult few months.
