By Muriel J. Smith

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The 20th annual Ms. Race, sponsored by the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club, will take place this year on Saturday, August 17th at 2 p.m. Registration for the race is open now through August 15th.

As it has been for two decades, the Ms. Race is a charity race benefitting 180 Turning Lives Around, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault in society.

All sailors and crew are invited to participate in the event, which will be held at the Yacht Club’s Olympic Circle and other markers in Sandy Hook Bay.

The race is open to sailing yachts with a valid PHRF-MA rating certificate from 2024 as well as to yachts that compete in a one-design configuration and whose skipper and crew consists exclusively of female sailors.

There are two PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) divisions in the Ms Race, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker, and a minimum of three boats must be registered in a division for that division to be eligible for competition.

Race day on August 17 begins at 10:30 a.m. with a captain’s meeting and sailing seminar at the Yacht Club, located in the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Harbor on the second floor of the Shore Casino, with views of the bay and race course. The Yacht Club opens at 10 a.m. and breakfast snacks will be served.

The race will start for the first boat at 2:00 p.m. and will continue throughout the afternoon. The award ceremony and trophy presentation will take place the same evening between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club.
