Raiders News: Rookie Safety Trey Taylor’s former coach talks about his NFL potential

The Las Vegas Raiders’ draft was controversial, with many media outlets questioning the selection of Brock Bowers. The Raiders chose the best available player under new general manager Tom Teleseco, even though they already had a starting tight end in Michael Mayer.

The rest of the draft didn’t respond as strongly, with strong late-round picks like Jackson Powers-Johnson and running back Dylan Laube. Both players could contribute and impact the roster in year one.

Former Air Force safety Trey Taylor was considered a steal late in the draft. Taylor was productive for Air Force, winning the Jim Thrope Award and scoring five defensive touchdowns as a college football player, but he fell to the seventh round of the draft, where he was selected by the Raiders, who had no immediate need at safety.

During the Mountian West Conference media day, Trey Taylor’s former head coach had high praise for the Raiders’ new safety and talked about his future prospects as a player in the NFL.

“I could talk about this young man forever. The word ‘great’ does not describe how extraordinary he is as a human being,” Calhoun said. “A truly remarkable person with the exact spirit and heart that he shares with every person he interacts with. His sheer drive and competitiveness and incredible drive to continue to improve and get better is unmatched. He is just made of the best stuff through and through.”

Taylor’s personality could help him make the roster in a tight safety room. His playmaking skills could shine in the preseason when he faces weaker quarterbacks. We’ll see how it plays out next week.
