The feature is available on both iOS and Android

What’s the matter

YouTube Music is rolling out Sound Search feature for Android and iOS users.

This innovative tool allows users to identify and find songs by humming, singing or playing a snippet of the melody.

The feature uses AI technology to match the incoming audio with the extensive music catalog.

After a brief period of wider availability, it was initially rolled back in May, but is now available again with version 7.10 and a server-side update following the announcement earlier this week.

How to access the new feature

To use the Sound Search feature, users need to tap the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of the YouTube Music app.

A new waveform icon appears next to the microphone.

By tapping this waveform icon, users can activate sound search and then hum, sing or play a snippet of a song for YouTube Music’s artificial intelligence to analyze it and provide a list of possible matches.

The identification process should be quite quick.

Results and recommendations for better use

Once the Sound Search feature is enabled, a full-screen results page will display the cover art, song name, album, artist, year, and even the download/offline status.

It also provides shortcuts for the Play or Save to Playlist options. For other functions, the standard overflow menu is available.

For best results with Sound Search, users are advised to hum or sing as accurately as possible and provide a longer audio sample.

If you’re not sure about the melody, it can be helpful to hum a recognizable part of the song.

A new era of music discovery?

The introduction of Sound Search on YouTube Music will revolutionize the way people discover and enjoy music.

This new addition makes it easier than ever to find that elusive earworm and is designed to significantly improve the user experience.

The Sound Search feature builds on Google’s Now Playing feature, which was introduced for Google Search in 2020 and later added to the YouTube app in October 2023.
