Former Michigan football player apparently dies in drowning accident

Utah State University has confirmed the tragic death of former Michigan football defensive back Andre Seldon Jr. According to a news release from the Cache Country Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at around 2:20 p.m. Saturday at Porcupine Dam.

“On July 20, 2024 at approximately 2:20 p.m., Cache County officials were dispatched to Porcupine Dam after a possible drowning accident was reported. Initial information indicates that a young man was observed jumping off the cliffs into the water and not resurfacing.”

LOGAN, Utah — The Utah State University community mourns the death of football student-athlete Andre Seldon Jr. On an afternoon Press releaseThe Cache County Sheriff’s Office said they are searching for a young man who was observed jumping off the cliffs at Porcupine Reservoir and not resurfacing. USU officials learned this evening that he was found by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team at 9:05 p.m.

“Our football program is deeply saddened to have to deal with the loss of one of our members,” said interim coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling. “Having previously shared a relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you that he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this terrible loss.”

Seldon joined the Utah State football program this summer and was scheduled to begin classes in the fall semester. He most recently played two seasons at New Mexico State University under USU interim coach Nate Dreiling. Before that, he spent two seasons at Michigan.

Seldon prepped at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” said Vice President and Athletic Director Diana Sabau. “We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, teammates and everyone who loved Andre.”
