Flood warning issued for West Michigan and the Saginaw Bay region

A flood warning was issued for all of Central Michigan on Saturday as a warm front is expected to bring persistent, heavy rain across the region.

“Heavy rain is expected to continue throughout today and tonight. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 centimeters are likely in some areas, with isolated higher amounts possible,” Gaylord NWS said in its flood warning for Manistee.

The main impacts will be excessive runoff, which may cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Streams and creeks may overflow their banks. Flooding may occur in areas with poor drainage and in urban areas.

A flood warning is in effect for Big Rapids, which also affects the cities of Greenville, Reed City, Mount Pleasant, Ludington, Baldwin, Hart, Clare, Alma, Muskegon and Fremont.

The probability of precipitation is 90% during the day, with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half an inch possible.

Overnight, especially before 2 a.m., there is a 90% chance of rain. New precipitation amounts of between 1.3 and 1.9 centimeters are also possible during this time.

Manistee is part of a flood warning that includes the cities of Tawas City, Cadillac, Gladwin, Standish, Houghton Lake, Lake City and West Branch.

There is a 90% chance of rain until Saturday, with new precipitation amounts of between 1.9 and 2.5 cm possible. There is also a 70% chance of precipitation overnight into Saturday.

Midland is part of a flood warning that also includes Bay City and Saginaw and will last until 6 a.m. Sunday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. The probability of precipitation is 80%, with new precipitation amounts between 1.3 and 9mm possible.
