A woman has been identified after she was stabbed to death by her daughter, who reportedly tried to set her on fire.

Joanne Perry, 53, died Friday night after suffering multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest, the Herald Sun reported.

Officers were called to Kett Street in Lower Plenty at around 6.30pm on Friday following reports that a 26-year-old woman had attempted to set her mother on fire.

Upon arrival, officers reported that they were stopped by the younger woman, who was armed with a knife.

Despite being asked to drop the weapon, the 26-year-old continued to stab her mother in the upper body and neck.

She was shot by a police officer and died at the scene.

At the time, the 26-year-old was out on bail for another matter.

Victoria Police Deputy Superintendent Scott Colson said the officer had “no choice” but to fire his weapon.

“It’s a terrible situation,” he said.

“They (the police officers) do not go to work expecting to draw their firearms and be involved in such tragedies.”

Superintendent Scott Colson said he was “pleased” with the officer’s actions in light of this “terrible situation.”

“(Police) were confronted with the fact that the daughter had stabbed the mother and ordered the daughter to drop the knife,” he said.

“However, she continued to stab the mother… tragically, both the mother and daughter died at the scene.”

Neighbours told the Herald Sun they heard several gunshots on the normally quiet street during the incident.

It is assumed that there were other people in the house at the time of the fatal attack, but the emergency call came from neighbors.

Victoria Police said in a statement that no other people were being sought in connection with the incident.

Homicide detectives will investigate the incident under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command, which is standard protocol when a police weapon is discharged.

Ms Perry is the 17th woman killed in Australia this year and the fourth murdered this month.
