Full results of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, winners announced and lamented ‘not a pleasant’ experience

Switzerland’s Nemo has won the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. The 24-year-old non-binary singer, dressed in a pink skirt and fluffy sweater, balanced on a wobbly metal disc as they sang their opera-dance mix track The Code on Saturday night. Nemo accepted the trophy in tears and said: “I would like to say a big thank you – I hope this competition can keep its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world.”

The final result was 591 points for Switzerland, while Baby Lasagna from Croatia received 547 points with the catchy and outrageous rim Tim Tagi Dim and Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil from Ukraine landed 453 points with the emotional and religious song Teresa & Maria.

The competition was marked by controversy surrounding the participation of Israeli artist Eden Golan, and a large group of protesters gathered outside Malmö Arena as the performances took place. Several protesters were also arrested and taken away by police, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest had previously disqualified the Dutch participant Joost Klein after an incident occurred between the singer and a camerawoman. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS sharply criticised this decision and called the punishment “very harsh and disproportionate”.

Irishman Bambie Thug, who competed with the gothic song Doomsday Blue, received 136 points and came in sixth place. Briton Olly Alexander didn’t come in last place with his dance-pop track Dizzy, but received the dreaded “zero points” from the audience vote. He ended up in 18th place.

Eurovision Song Contest 2024 winner Nemo Mettler said they were “really sad” following the chaotic scenes and protests during the contest. The nonbinary singer, 24, in a pink skirt and fluffy sweater, balanced on a wobbly metal disc as they sang their opera-dance mix song “The Code” in Malmö, Sweden, on Saturday night.

Nemo said at the Eurovision press conference: “I have to say, this whole experience was really intense and not only pleasant. There were a lot of things that didn’t seem like it was all about love and unity. And that made me really sad and at the same time… there was so much love here too.”

“And so much came together, so many different cultures came together and people were just full of positivity and love for music, and that really gives me hope.

“And I know that these people exist and that they exist in the world, but … we have to work to create such an environment where we have to ask ourselves: What is such an environment? And what do we want to stand for?

“And I really hope that the Eurovision Song Contest will continue and can continue to stand for peace and love in the future. I think there is still a lot of work to be done on that.”
