Twins place Carlos Correa and Chris Paddack on the injured list

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Twins placed All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa on the injured list Saturday for treatment of plantar fasciitis in his right foot, giving him the precautionary rest he was denied last season due to the same condition in his other foot.

Starting pitcher Chris Paddack also landed on the injured list before the game against Milwaukee with a strained right forearm after feeling tension during the break.

All-rounder Austin Martin (strained right oblique) was recalled from the injured list and second baseman Edouard Julien was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to fill roster spots, but the five-day break hasn’t given the struggling Twins much of a boost. Infielders Royce Lewis (strained right groin) and Jose Miranda (strained lower back) and reliever Kyle Farmer (strained right shoulder) remained on the injured list, along with other players on longer-term playing plans.

Correa was unable to participate in Tuesday’s All-Star Game because he spent most of last season nursing an injury to his left foot. This version appears to be less severe, but during the break he received a platelet-rich plasma injection that has kept him in a walking boot for several days.

Correa’s absence is expected to last significantly less than a month, manager Rocco Baldelli said, but the difficulty for the Twins will be deciding when to clear him for action, given how much his performance suffered from the injury layoff in 2023.

Correa has a .308 batting average with an .896 OPS, his best in seven years. He has 13 home runs, 47 RBI and 51 runs in 75 games. For now, Willi Castro – an All-Star rookie – will be the primary shortstop, with rookie Brooks Lee at third base for Lewis and Julien back at second base, where he began the season before a major slump. Julien has a .207 batting average with seven home runs and 17 RBI in 58 games in his first appearance.

Due to his recent injury, Lewis missed his 12th consecutive game after missing 58 games earlier in the season due to a strained right quadriceps.

Lewis took batting practice and ran before Saturday’s game. He said his body “feels great” and he’s just waiting for clearance from medical staff. Baldelli said Lewis will likely play next week as part of a short rehab period.

“I think if it was playoffs or they let me, I would definitely be there. That’s how good I feel,” Lewis said, later adding, “I think they’re doing the best they can for me, but I feel great and whenever I feel good, I want to go now because I hate missing time. I’m over it.”

Paddack’s spot in the rotation will need to be filled on Wednesday. After sitting out briefly with arm fatigue, he started twice before the break before suffering his latest setback. Baldelli said there are no structural issues with Paddack’s surgically-operated elbow and his stay on the injured list should not be long.

“His elbow seems fine, the ligament seems fine, everything seems fine,” Baldelli said. “I think there are signs that it’s some sort of muscle strain and it should heal well.”
