Chappell Roan has reached the level of fame “people are getting annoying and weird”

Today from the “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things or Extremely Satisfying Summer Jams” department: Rising music superstar Chappell Roan has given an interview in which she hints that she may quickly retire from the whole “rising music superstar” thing, telling the Comment section Podcast that maybe it was time to “put the brakes on” her career moves because “people have started being freaks.”

Roan went into the details of this craziness, saying, “(They) follow me and know where my parents live and where my sister works. All that weird shit. This,” she added, “is the time a few years ago when I said if there were stalker vibes or my family was in danger, I would stop. And here we are. Here we are!”

Although Roan has been performing publicly for a decade, her breakthrough came earlier this year when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo’s Offal world tour. This led to festival appearances, hit singles and finally their (very good) debut album in 2023 The rise and fall of a Midwestern princess from a critically acclaimed “surprise hit” to a “real hit that doesn’t involve any jokes.” And that came, predictably, with cranks treating fairly mundane information — like “Where does Chappell Roan’s sister work?” — as if it were some precious, parasocial treasure.

According to Roan, it actually has an impact on her promotional work and her future career plans: “I“I’m just in this fight… I’ve honestly been putting the brakes on everything to get more exposure. It’s kind of a wildfire right now. I’m not trying to do any shit.” Of course, this isn’t the first time an artist’s fame has suddenly massively outpaced her infrastructure for dealing with it/protecting people from it (and/or the weirdos it spawns and attracts). But since Roan’s rise has been one of the joys of the last year in music, here’s hoping she finds a way to weather the storm without making her life hell.
