The Woodland Library Rose Club recently awarded two outstanding Woodland students with $1,000 academic scholarships. The Bobbie Ochoa Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students based on their academic achievement, extracurricular activities and moral character.

This year’s fellows are Nicholas Safran and Trevor Harryman.

Safran is the son of Rose Club members Greg and Dolores Safran. He recently completed his sophomore year at Sacramento City College and will be attending Sacramento State in the fall to pursue a degree in computer science. He will take courses in computer programming and art and dreams of working in the entertainment industry someday.

He enjoys playing board and computer games and is keen to develop his own games and projects that inspire others to create imaginative and entertaining worlds. He has been an asset to the Rose Club over the years, not only in the garden but also as a hands-on helper in many of the club’s fundraising events. His moral character is evident in his respect for family, friends and acquaintances and he always demonstrates honesty, trustworthiness and reliability.

Harryman is the grandson of Rose Club member Kathy Harryman and will attend UC Santa Cruz this fall. He recently graduated from Pioneer High School with a 3.79 GPA, earning him a spot on the school’s honor roll. While at Pioneer High School, he was captain of the boys tennis team for three years and was named the team’s MVP.

Because he was a senior member of Skills USA’s robotics mechanical subteam, newer members often looked to him for guidance and help. The team became the regional champions of Robotics Section 5458.

His moral character was evident when he witnessed a car accident. He immediately stopped to check the condition of the occupants, called 911, and then gave the rescue team any information he could to help them. He has also worked hard on his commitment to succeed and maintain a high standard of performance.

The Woodland Library Rose Club was formed in 1989 to plant and maintain the Woodland Public Library’s rose gardens. A dedicated group of club members maintains the gardens every Wednesday morning.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the scholarship fund may send it to the Woodland Library Rose Club Bobbie Ochoa Scholarship Fund, 250 First St., Woodland, California 95695.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Rose Club can also inquire at the address above or simply stop by the garden on Wednesday morning.
