Summer continues with full club calendars and parties

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), FL District 11, held its first meeting during Ruth Martinez’s tenure as District Director on June 21, bringing together 12 women’s clubs from South Florida to share ideas and collaborate.

With Martinez at the helm, you can expect some fun joint events soon. In fact, the following week, many clubs from District 11 joined Ruth at the GFWC International Convention at the Chicago Hilton.

The members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club were especially proud to attend the convention and support their club sister Elizabeth Hicks, who was selected as a graduate of GFWC Florida. Among the many other club members from District 11 in attendance were Elizabeth Fisher, Arely Ruiz, Linda Hartwell, Linda Joseph, Metris Batts, Shirley Pardon, Noreen Timoney, Rose Martins and Clora Adkins.

As for future summer fun, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) is already planning events for August and next summer. On Tuesday, August 13, the club’s Gringo (Dingo) Bingo fundraiser at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen will benefit Voices for Children, Tucker Elementary and Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE). The public is invited to support this fun-filled evening featuring host and entertainer extraordinaire Steven Bradley and party music from star DJ Germain. Admission is $30 and includes a wine, beer or soda, 12 game cards for great prizes and a coverall card for the grand prize.

Thank you to Kings Bowl Doral, sponsors such as Lynn Bauer and Hal Wanless, Carlos and Mayra Rossi, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Jerry Kavulich and local businesses such as Seasons 52, Threefold Cafe and Clutch Burger and many more for prize donations over the years. To pledge, email [email protected].

CGWC is even planning a fundraiser next June with a six-day cruise on a new ship with proceeds benefiting the club’s free children’s dental clinic. This is open to all GFWC members, friends, family and supporters. Look for more information on this in future issues. July 9th was a great day for this writer, who returned from a bad fall that required surgery to host Gloria’s Gab LIVE with an impressive guest: Luis Valenzuela, founder of the Miami Shoe Museum. Luis is a creative genius. He is a certified art teacher, fine artist and fashion designer.

Born in Venezuela, Luis is a descendant of four generations of artists. His story of teaching students and introducing them to new innovative ways of combining art, design and technology will amaze you. In addition, he has a collection of over 400 shoes for a museum and a research project that will have a global impact.

The museum is scheduled to open in August. For more information, visit www.miamishoemuseum.us.

Finally, June 14 was Flag Day and a rainy, stormy day necessitated a potluck dinner with friends to celebrate the day later. Susan and John Medina have a beautiful flag and wanted to spend a patriotic day with friends who came up with delicious patriotic-themed dishes, including Lynn Bauer, whose strawberry shortcake had the image of a flag. Thank you for sharing the pie with us and for the many dinners during my recovery.

Until next time, share your time and talents, be grateful for what you have, and make a difference.
