Aaron Schatz: Extends Chris Godwin’s contract

22 June 2024

Pay him now?

Many Bucs fans have been grumbling for weeks, maybe even months, that the Bucs need to re-sign their left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Aaron Schatz, the founder of Football outsiders (RIP) and inventor of DVOA, also believes Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has one more financial move to make to complete his offseason. But Schatz isn’t thinking about Wirfs.

Schatz must now be cared for by Chris Godwin.

WR Chris Godwin extend

Godwin’s contract expires after the 2024 season, but let’s not think about it too much. He’s an absolutely above-average wide receiver in the NFL and someone Tampa Bay would like to keep. An extension could also help spread Godwin’s salary cap over the three years he’s out…

Things change quickly in the NFL. Maybe a month ago, Joe thought the Bucs had drafted Washington receiver Jalen McMillan as a possible replacement for Godwin.

Maybe it’s a bit of a stretch to think that the plan for Team Glazer to pay two receivers over $20 million a year (again) is because the no-risk-it; no-biscuit offense is a thing of the past.

But man, receivers have been paid well across the NFL this offseason, so given the current market, paying Godwin over $20 million per year for the fourth consecutive year doesn’t seem like much of a stretch anymore.

And as for Wirfs? Yes, he is in the final season of his current one. In fact, Wirfs has stayed away from minicamp because he is trying to avoid taking risks before getting a new contract.

As for Godwin’s future, Joe believes Godwin will be playing for a new contract this season. If Trey Palmer doesn’t improve and McMillan struggles, the Bucs are in a pretty tight spot with Godwin.
