Taylor Swift performs 2 diss tracks after Scooter Braun announcement

Look at what you made them do.

Taylor Swift felt big Call during her Eras Tour show in Cardiff, Wales, on Tuesday, when she performed not one but two diss tracks from her body of work: “I Forgot That You Existed” and “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.” Keen-eyed fans were quick to point out that the mashup, which came during the surprise acoustic song set that differs each night of the tour, came just one day after Scooter Braun announced his resignation as music manager. Tuesday also happened to be Braun’s birthday.

Swift made no mention of Braun or their years-long battle over the rights to the master recordings of her first six albums, which Braun’s company Ithaca Holdings acquired in 2019 (and later sold to private equity firm Shamrock Holdings, to Swift’s dismay, ultimately leading to her re-recording said albums to own them herself).

However, she burst into laughter on stage during the mashup, which she performed on acoustic guitar. In videos shared by attendees, Swift can be seen getting to the part where Call Track “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” where she sings “Because forgiveness is a nice thing,” but instead of a brief cackle like in the original recording, she just couldn’t stop laughing, much to the delight of the screaming crowd. She eventually went on to say the lyric, “I can’t even say it with a straight face,” before ending the performance.

However, this wasn’t the first time the 14-time Grammy winner had performed these particular songs during the Eras Tour. She had previously performed both songs during other acoustic sets earlier on the tour, though this was the first time they were combined together. The set, which always includes one performance on guitar and one on piano, is a fan favorite because Swift tries to play a different song (or mashup) for each song on each tour date.

Braun announced in a lengthy statement on Monday that he is retiring from music management after 23 years. Instead, he will focus on his position as CEO of HYBE America and on his family. He unofficially retired from managing top artists such as Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande last year.

“It’s a weird feeling because I think I’ve wanted this for a while, but I was really afraid to answer the question, ‘Who would I be without her?'” Braun mused in his statement Monday. “I was really only 19 when I started. So my whole life I played the role of an artist manager who was on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And for 20 years I loved it. That was all I knew.”

“But as my children grew older and my personal life suffered some setbacks, I realized that my children were three superstars that I did not want to lose,” he added. “I could no longer justify the sacrifices I was once willing to make. It was time to take on a new role.”

Swift’s Eras Tour continues this weekend with three shows in London.
