More about You have the silver by The Rolling Stones

Keith Richards wrote this country love song for Anita Pallenberg. Unlike the usual Stones songs, Keith took over the lead vocals instead of Mick Jagger. In contrast to Salt of the Earthwhen he sang only one verse, this was his first Stones project where he sang the entire song. This is allegedly due to an error by the sound engineer when transferring the master tapes, which removed Mick Jagger’s vocals from the multi-track recording. Mick Jagger was in Australia in July, August and part of September to record his film Ned Kelly and so they used Keith’s vocals over the remastered track. Yes, there is a version where Mick sings, but it’s an older recording with a slightly faster singing style. Michelangelo Antonioni chose the finished track for the soundtrack of his film Zabriskie PointAlthough it appeared in the film, it was not on the CD soundtrack, which also featured Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd.

You have the silver is a 100% pure Keith Richards creation, inspired by his love affair with Anita. The song’s lyrics, filled with longing and possessiveness, paint a vivid portrait of their passionate relationship. With lines like “You have my soul/You have the silver, you have the gold”, Richards lets his heart bare and shows a vulnerability rarely heard in his music. This track is a testament to his skill as a songwriter and the intense connection he had with Pallenberg.

Anita Pallenberg, the muse of Brian, Keith and Mick, had a penchant for the occult. According to Tony Sanchez (Keith’s former driver and drug dealer at the time) in his book Up and down with the Rolling Stones“She was obsessed with black magic and always wore a garlic necklace with her – even in bed – to ward off vampires. She also had a strange, mysterious old holy water jar that she used for some of her rituals. Her ceremonies became increasingly secretive and she warned me never to interrupt her when she was working on a spell.” Despite her unusual beliefs, Keith managed to capture the essence of their passionate relationship in the song, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere through his acoustic guitar playing. Brian Jones contributes the autoharp, while Nicky Hopkins adds depth with his piano and organ.
