Production on Amazon’s live-action TV series TOMB RAIDER is set to begin early next year

In May it was announced that Phoebe Waller-Bridges Grave robbers TV series has officially been pushed forward at Amazon Prime Video. In a recent interview with TheWrap about the streaming service’s upcoming projects, Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, gave an update on the show’s production status.

Pre-production appears to still be underway, but the studio is making good progress. Sanders added that they have yet to figure out who will play Lara Croft, but he expects production to begin early next year.

“We’re working hard. We have great material. Phoebe is really good. We’re really excited.” Sanders said. “I guess we’ll spend the rest of the year getting everything ready so we can start production early next year. We need to find our Lara Croft, so the worldwide search will start sooner rather than later.”

Based on the blockbuster video game franchise, Prime Video’s adaptation was described as “Epos” And “Globetrotter” Adventure. Specific plot details have not been revealed yet, but there is no shortage of exciting adventures for Lara Croft to experience.

The Grave robbers Video games have been around since the first game was released in 1996 for PC, PlayStation and SEGA Saturn consoles. A sequel, Tomb Raider IIwas released a year later for PC and PlayStation.

Over the years, the ownership of the video game franchise changed hands several times. Eidos Interactive owned it from 1996 to 2009, until Square Enix acquired Eidos in 2009. Embracer Group bought the IP along with Eidos in 2022, but now the franchise is owned by CDE Entertainment.

The video game series was relaunched in 2013 by Crystal Dynamics with the release of Grave robbersthe first game of the planned Survivor trilogy. The sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raiderwas published in 2015, followed by the third and final part of the trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raiderin 2018. All three games received generally positive reviews and were largely successful in sales.

Amazon Grave robbers The series is not the first adaptation of the popular video game series. In the early 2000s, two film adaptations were made with Angelina Jolie in the lead role: Lara Croft Tomb Raider in 2001 and its continuation, The cradle of lifein 2003. Both films were panned by critics but were financially successful.

A reboot followed in 2018 with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft was released. The film was only slightly better received than the original two films, but still only received a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 55%.

Since then, video game adaptations have undoubtedly improved significantly, and there is hope that Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s take on the franchise could be the best yet.
