Webjet reports a surprising 48% of Australians opting for solo expeditions to famous destinations

Almost half of Australian travellers (48%) are preparing for solo adventures in the next few years, with a full 25% planning to take their trip by 2024. These aren’t just short trips; Australians are eagerly planning to explore the places at the top of their bucket list on their longer solo trips.

Recent Webjet insights based on research and booking patterns show a growing interest in solo travel, especially among Baby Boomers (48%) and Generation X (26%).

Millennials, on the other hand, use solo travel as a remedy for workplace burnout: 45% use these trips to relieve work stress, and 42% see them as an opportunity for an extended break from their careers.

The demand for professional guidance among solo travellers

Travel advisors are pleased to see that the solo travel market is expanding beyond short getaways; many are planning ambitious expeditions, embarking on their dream trip.

A significant proportion (43%) would like to visit at least three destinations and half of respondents (50%) plan to travel alone for three weeks or longer.

Often pressed for time, these travelers are aware of the complexity involved in organizing and booking multi-city trips. Almost half (44%) find organizing a solo trip time-consuming and challenging, and 12% admit that these difficulties deter them from traveling alone.

Leading destinations for solo travellers worldwide

Australian solo travellers’ favourite destinations combine familiar local spots with iconic international cities.

According to Webjet data, Bali tops the list for solo international travellers in 2024-2025 with 15% of bookings, followed by London (10%), Auckland (6%) and Queenstown (4%).

Other popular cities include Manila, Tokyo, Bangkok and Los Angeles, each accounting for three percent of bookings. Christchurch and Athens complete the top ten with two percent of bookings for solo travelers each.
