Authors AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia have teamed up for another comic book series – after previously writing several projects together, including a GLOW Comic adaptation – which will celebrate Mexican culture through a classic supernatural horror story. The series, Day of the Dead Girlbrings together Garcia and Mendez with artist Belén Culebras and is published by indie publisher Magma Comix.

Screen Rant is pleased to present the exclusive first look at the cover of Day of the Dead Girl #1. The series will consist of three issues and will take readers on a wild journey through the rich supernatural knowledge of Mexico.

According to the synopsis of the series, the protagonist’s return home The whole story develops into a horror scenario when more and more members of her mother’s coven are killed in the run-up to the funeral ceremonies in her town.

AJ Mendez was a wrestler in the WWE from 2009 to 2015. Aimee Garcia is an actress known for her roles in television series such as
Dexter

and many more. In addition to their joint comic work, they co-wrote the screenplay for the Netflix film

Mendez also wrote a Wonder Woman story for

is one of the most exciting indie comic releases this fall.

According to the frightening opening line of the synopsis for Day of the Dead Girl:Death is never the end of the story.” Co-authors AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia will a gripping and disturbing crime thriller deeply rooted in Mexico’s cultural traditions about death. The rest of the summary reads:

Death is never the end of the story. Forensic pathologist Sam Castillo learns this the hard way when a supernatural serial killer targets her hometown just as she returns. A skeptical woman of science, Sam clashes with her spiritual mother Ana, the leader of a coven of witches specializing in brujeria. But when the coven’s brujas are found murdered, Sam and Ana must work together to find the killer and prevent their town’s Day of the Dead celebration from becoming an occult bloodbath. As if sharing a bathroom with her mother wasn’t hard enough.


As Aimee Garcia noted, representation in the comics medium was a key motivation for the project. Garcia explained:

Growing up, I didn’t see comics that reflected my Mexican heritage, so I’m thrilled to create Day of the Dead Girl with AJ and introduce readers to our rich Latino culture. Not only will Belén Culebras’ stunning imagery put readers in the middle of a joyous celebration of the Day of the Dead, but this story will also speak to the core of what unites us all…death.

Her co-writer, meanwhile, stressed that readers can expect spine-chilling suspense from the series. As AJ Mendez said:

We can’t wait to join you on this wonderfully gory adventure. Writing this supernatural horror story was a crazy dream and we really hope it gives you nightmares. Read our morbid magical mystery at your own risk.


Mendez and Garcia’s previous comic collaborations – an official Dungeons Comic adaptation and an official connection to Netflix’ GLOW TV series – allowed them to demonstrate their skills as writers in both action and humor. seems to be a promising beginning of a long phase of creating memorable works in this medium.


Although the tone is completely different than fans would expect Day of the Dead GirlGarcia and Mendez GLOW against the Babyface offers a great introduction for fans who can’t wait to read the duo’s work. In some ways, the lightheartedness of the accompanying miniseries will provide a useful contrast to the horrors the writers will unleash in their upcoming series. As the first independent comic title from AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia, Day of the Dead Girl seems to be a promising beginning of a long phase of creating memorable works in this medium.

Artist Belén Culebras, who implemented the authors’ work on the site, is particularly enthusiastic. Culebras explained:

Drawing Day Of the Dead Girl is a dream come true. If you asked me what kind of story you would like to draw, it would be exactly this one. I love the theme of witchcraft and ghosts, crime investigation, Latin American culture… It’s magical, I couldn’t ask for anything better.


While readers will have to wait a little longer to take a look at Culebras’ interior design, Day of the Dead Girlhis enthusiasm for the series should be another indication to readers that this series is not to be missed. After Dungeons And GLOW, The new comic series created by AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia will take their creative tag-team partnership to the next level.

Based on the 1980s wrestling phenomenon of the same name, GLOW (also known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) is a comedy-drama series produced by Netflix. It focuses on the women and people behind the unconventional new wrestling federation. The series follows three main characters, unsuccessful actress Ruth Wilder, former soap star Debbie Eagen and director Sam Sylvia, as they clash over how to move their new project forward while also dealing with the discrimination issues in the entertainment industry in the 80s.
