Choreographer claims dancers were not paid

Los Angeles-based choreographer Rajat said all desi dancers are undervalued. He also claimed that the dancers from Diljit’s Dil Luminati tour were not paid. In a social media post, he wrote, “While we as a desi dance community are truly proud to see a desi artist breaking glass ceilings and doing sold-out tours across North America, I am still deeply disappointed that desi dancers as an industry are still undervalued. All desi dancers from Diljit’s Dil Luminati tour were not paid and were simply expected to perform for free.”

Rajat added, “Desi dance as an industry has become a lifeblood for artistes and plays a significant role in the entire ecosystem of the industry… with choreography, stage performances, music videos, reels and even promotion of songs… It is an essential part of production and it is really disappointing to see an artist of this calibre cutting corners by stepping on the toes of the desi dancer industry and continuing to contribute to this culture.”
