Crowdstrike update causes blue screen failure on Windows 10

This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow…

Millions of Microsoft Windows 10 devices experienced the Blue Screen of Death (#BYOD) today – reportedly due to an update issue with Crowdstrike.

Flights were cancelled and people around the world reported their computers getting stuck in a boot loop and failing to load, while customers were unable to pay at supermarket checkouts due to problems with point-of-sale (PoS) devices.

Sky News was unable to broadcast this morning, while in the US major airlines such as American, Delta and United kept their planes on dry land. In the UK, the Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Great Northern rail lines also struggled with IT problems.

On X, Troy Hunt, creator of @haveibeenpwned, wrote: “I don’t think it’s too early to predict: This will be the biggest IT outage in history.”

On Reddit, users claimed that Crowdstrike sent an alert that said: “Hi all – we’ve had numerous reports of BSODs on Windows hosts occurring on multiple sensor versions. We’re investigating the cause. TA will be released shortly.”

A recorded phone message can now allegedly be heard on the technical support hotline that reads: “Thank you for contacting Crowdstrike Support. Crowdstrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows… related to the Falcon sensor.”

Underneath this post, another forum user wrote: “I mean, you can’t say it doesn’t protect you from malware if your entire system and servers are down.”

On X, a security engineer wrote: “CrowdStrike calls an early weekend by taking down half the world’s systems. Not even ransomware is that effective.”
