Drone attack in Tel Aviv claims one life and injures ten

Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility Friday for an early morning drone blast that is believed to have detonated over Tel Aviv, leaving at least 10 people injured and one dead. The airstrike roared through the streets, raining down shrapnel and leaving a large blast radius, authorities said. It was not immediately clear how the attack evaded Israel’s air defenses or how Israel might respond, the AP reports. Israel’s military said it had stepped up air patrols after the incident.

The Houthis praised the drone’s ability to evade Israel’s air defenses and said they wanted to penetrate deep into Israel in response to the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas militias, now in its ninth month. The group has repeatedly fired drones and rockets toward Israel throughout the war in sympathy with Hamas. As of Friday, however, all drones had been intercepted by either Israel or Western allies with troops stationed in the region.

The Houthis’ attack came hours after the Israeli military confirmed that one of its airstrikes had killed a Hezbollah commander and other militants in southern Lebanon. Israel has not attacked the Houthis so far, letting its allies take the lead while it focuses its efforts on the war in Gaza and the ongoing fighting with Hezbollah. (More stories from Israel.)
