74-year-old Michigan man with dementia stabs his wife and grandson before stabbing himself, police say

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A 74-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday after allegedly stabbing his wife and grandson to death in Sterling Heights.

At around 7:20 p.m., police responded to the 11900 block of Danforth Drive. According to preliminary investigations, the man, who suffers from dementia, was awakened by his wife and allegedly attacked her with a knife, causing superficial wounds to her face and neck.

Police said the man’s grandson, a man in his mid-20s, intervened and was stabbed in the stomach. The victims ran from the house.

According to police, the man then went into the basement and began stabbing himself. Officers found the man and used a taser to get him to drop the knife. The man, his wife and his grandson were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The officers did a great job of arriving on the scene, providing medical attention to the injured, and simultaneously confronting an armed and dangerous individual. By using non-lethal weapons to bring the suspect under control, they prevented an encounter with deadly force and were also able to provide him with medical aid,” Sterling Heights police said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing. The case will be turned over to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
