Xolo Maridueña announces animated series “Blue Beetle”

Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle will switch from live-action to animation for a new television series. The actor, who previously played the young superhero in the DC Extended Universe, made a big splash on the red carpet during the premiere of Cobra Kai Season 6.

Speaking to Deadline, Maridueña shared that Warner Bros. and DC Studios are “still rounding up the rest of the gang to make sure they all” get to the animated Blue Beetle series, even though he believed everyone would return. “(It’s) voiceover, so we should be able to do it better in secret,” he addedbefore talking about how honored he was that WB and DC were continuing Jaime Reyes’ story. “As someone who has never stopped watching cartoons, it is a great honor to bring Blue Beetle to the small screen.” He also confirmed that he would be open to repeating the role in a live-action film Should the opportunity arise in the future, and said: “Come on, of course!”

Blue Beetle was one of the last DCEU films

Blue Beetle was released in 2023 as the penultimate part of the DCEU. Directed by Soto, Blue Beetle follows college graduate Jaime Reyes (Maridueña), who unexpectedly discovers that he is in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the “Scarab.” The Scarab chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host and transforms him into the superhero Blue Beetle.

Although it is the DCEU film with the lowest box office gross at just over $130 million, Blue Beetle was a streaming hit on Max, becoming the most-streamed film on the platform at the time. Maridueña’s performance was also praised. DC fans have known since August 2023 that Blue Beetle will be part of James Gunn’s DCU, with the filmmaker himself sharing at the time that Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle will be an “amazing part of the DCU” in the future.
