The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 plunged into further chaos after the French singer’s speech

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest got off to a chaotic start amid widespread protests against Israel’s participation in the contest.

A pro-Palestinian protest rally involving thousands of people has broken out in host country Sweden, arguing that Israel should not be allowed to participate in the Gaza war given the country’s ongoing war against Gaza.

Slimane Nebch, originally from France, took the opportunity to call for peace during the rehearsal, telling the audience: “United by music, yes, but for love, for peace.”

Two judges have also given up their power in the competition. The Finn Käärijä said it “didn’t feel right” to award 2024 points in the competition.

Meanwhile, protesters were caught on video shouting “Shame on you” at spectators at the stadium in Malmö.

To add to the chaos at the opening, Dutch competitor Joost Klein, 26, was disqualified following allegations of inappropriate behavior backstage.

Klein was considered the favorite to win the competition, but was disqualified due to complaints from a female production member.

The participation of 31-year-old Irishwoman Bambie Thug, who is also one of the favorites in the competition, is also questionable after the two did not take part in a dress rehearsal today.

Commenting on her absence, the singer said: “While we were waiting to go on stage for the flag parade rehearsal, there was a situation that I felt required urgent attention from the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). The EBU has taken this matter seriously and we have discussed what action needs to be taken.”

“This meant I missed my dress rehearsal – I’m really sorry for the fans who came to see me. I hope to see you on stage tonight.”

The United Kingdom will be represented in the competition by 33-year-old Olly Alexander, an actor and singer who first rose to fame in 2021 for his role in the LGBTQ+ series It is a sin.

Amid widespread calls for a complete boycott of this year’s competition, Alexander issued a statement in support of those who chose not to watch.

“I fully support the measures being taken to demand an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all hostages and the safety of all civilians in Palestine and Israel,” he said.

“I know that some people will boycott this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and I understand and respect their decision.”

Israel will be represented by Eden Golan, who will perform her song “Hurricane,” the original lyrics of which were adapted from a song called “October Rain,” which appeared to refer to the Hamas attacks on Gaza.

According to current Eurovision guidelines, participants are not allowed to perform political songs.

But despite the controversy surrounding Golan’s participation, she is considered the favorite for the competition: According to Oddschecker, the warring country’s chances of victory are 25 percent.
