NORTH BALTIMORE – The North Baltimore Garden Club is hosting a community party on Aug. 11 to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

The club was founded in 1934 with Mae Fleckner as the first club president. Much has changed over the past nine decades, but the members’ love of gardening has remained the same.

At first, members were required to wear hats and gowns. Meetings were held in a fairly formal setting, and members were listed on the membership list with the names of their husbands.

Today, members may come to meetings in jeans and flip-flops. They aren’t afraid to get dirty. They can often be found digging in the dirt and throwing around compost, but they still have just as much fun as previous members.

Throughout its history, the organization has been very active in the Village of North Baltimore, holding monthly meetings, garden tours, and flower shows. For many years, the club attended the Wood County Fair and entered floats in the North Baltimore Halloween Parade. Times have changed, but members still use their gardening knowledge to maintain the Village’s gardens and select Gardeners of the Month to honor the Village’s beauty.

The birthday party in downtown North Baltimore between the historical society and the library will be from noon to 3 p.m. The event will include a car ride, face painting, free crafts for kids, food trucks (available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), select vendors, a farmers market and music. The garden club will also give away plants to the first 100 adults in attendance.

The library will set up a cooling station in the community room and the North Baltimore Historical Center will be open for tours, including a special exhibit about the garden club through the years.

For membership information or more information about the August 11 event, such as how to become a vendor or register for the car show, visit the club’s Facebook page or email [email protected].

Like many clubs, the North Baltimore Garden Club nearly went out of business about six years ago, but in recent years it has seen a resurgence in membership and events. The club will host its annual Guest Night on September 23rd at 6 p.m. at the North Baltimore Public Library. In addition to recruiting new members, the event will also provide educational information and gardening ideas for members, members of other clubs, and guests.
