Pittsburgh Steelers announce new game day voice

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers are welcoming a new but familiar voice into their locker room this season: They have announced that Rob King will take on the role of live commentator for the team starting in 2024.

King replaced Bill Hargrove, who served as the team’s game-day voice for 30 years. His first game will be Aug. 9, when the Steelers host the Houston Texans in the season opener.

“We are thrilled to announce that Rob King will be the Steelers’ new live commentator beginning this season following the retirement of longtime commentator Bill Hillgrove earlier this year,” Steelers President Art Rooney II told Steelers.com. “Rob has done a tremendous job in his 25-year career in the Pittsburgh market and is well respected by his peers in the industry. We’re excited for Steelers Nation to hear his unique perspective and enthusiasm for making our fans feel like they’re in the stadium experiencing the action on the field. He has big shoes to fill with the legendary commentators who came before him, but we’re thrilled for Rob to step into his new role to bring Steelers football to our fans around the world.”

Since arriving in Pittsburgh, King has played with both the Pirates and Penguins. During the 2019 season, he filled in for Hargrove for part of the season as the longtime commentator recovered from back surgery. Now, King will take on the role full-time.

“There are a number of reasons,” King said of accepting the role. “First of all, it’s exciting to be a bigger part of the Steelers experience. For the last decade, I’ve been part of the Steelers program on game days. This will be a continuation of that, and for me, it’s the highest level of game day programming, which is commentating on the games themselves. In Pittsburgh, it’s exciting to be part of the Steelers, and now to be able to do the games is a dream come true.”
