Legislator introduces bill on induced suicide

A state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would punish people who induce suicide or endanger the lives of others through social media.

Rep. Araceli Geraldo, who recently introduced the bill, said several challenges have emerged on social media in recent years that have put lives at risk. These challenges, while not considered offensive, can have devastating consequences, she said.

According to the legislature, these challenges include dangerous behavior such as inflicting injuries and even suicide.

According to Geraldo, the bill aims to establish preventive measures and give authorities the means to protect people’s mental health and well-being, especially young people, who are particularly vulnerable.

If passed, the bill would amend the state’s criminal code to make induced suicide via social media a homicide offense, and if challenged, the penalty would double.

The proposal also obliges prosecutors, educational authorities and psychiatric clinics to take measures to address this problem.

“Recently, several incidents have been reported in states like Zacatecas where several teenagers have died due to the Do Not Breath Challenge,” Geraldo said. “Many adolescents and adults can lose their lives by participating in these challenges.”

The lawmaker added that children and young people are more vulnerable due to the use of technology and that there is little regulation on the Internet.
