Multi-disciplinary riders Thalita de Jong and Thomas Mein both crossed the finish line alone to win a muddy edition of Gravel One Fifty, the second Dutch round of the 2024 UCI Gravel World Series.
De Jong, the 2016 cyclocross world champion who had a successful season on the road with Lotto Soudal Ladies, was competing in her first gravel race. She finished more than a minute ahead of Mariëlle Trouwborst, with third place going to Wendy Oosterwoud, who recovered from a crash at kilometer 40.
British cyclocross and mountain bike racer Mein won ahead of Rick Ottema and Brent Clé, who fought hard to the finish line, closely followed by Jasper Ockeloen and Adne Koster.
The race took place on a muddy, flat 150km course, with heavy rain leading up to it. The course started and finished in Peize, on the border of the three northern provinces of the Netherlands – Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe – and headed south over a mixture of dirt tracks, gravel roads and grassy sections. As a round of the UCI Gravel World Series, riders in the top 25% qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships on October 5 and 6.
Last year, Pauliena Rooijakkers, who did not take part this year as she was competing in the women’s Giro d’Italia, and Sam Gademan won the race. This year, Gademan finished in 27th place.
