College football star suffering from cancer seeks help from the community

IIn the busy world of college football, where names like Caleb WilliamsAnd Marvin Harrison Jr. like confetti is thrown around, there is a name you may not have heard: Chris Lewis. The Troy University Star, a redshirt junior and former four-star recruit, should be making headlines for his dazzling skills as a deep threat. Instead, he’s making headlines for a battle far tougher than any he’s faced on the football field.

Lewisoriginally committed Kentucky before switching to Troyproved to be one of the most electrifying wide receivers in the nation last year. He grabbed 32 catches for a breathtaking 735 yards and ten touchdowns, leads the country with a breathtaking 22.97 yards per catch. His highlight series was regularly on sport Centerespecially after his spectacular three-touchdown win over South Alabama, which included not one but two one-handed catches that caused excitement among fans and commentators.

But just as he was about to become a household name, life dealt him a devastating blow. In December 2023, just days after his appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, Lewis was diagnosed with: Osteosarcomaa rare and aggressive form of Bone cancerin his left thigh. Instead of preparing for another season of acrobatic catches and end zone dances, he was facing the fight of his life.

Chris Lewis in the spotlight: The support of the football community

Lewis gained weight GoFundMe to tell his story and reveal the brutal treatment he faced: 10 weeks of chemotherapy, an operation to remove the tumor and then another 10 weeks of chemo. “I had to leave my teammates, friends, coaches and support system in Troy to begin an intensive treatment process.” he wrote, pouring his heart out in the hopes of receiving support. The financial burden, even with insurance, was enormous. But the college football community, which has always been a close-knit family, quickly rallied around him.

Chris Lewis was one of my favorite stars last season. I wish him all the best in his recovery.!” tweeted one fan, echoing the feelings of many fans and fellow athletes. “@ChrisLew__, keep fighting and you will be back on the field! I’m so happy that you can help as a student assistant!“wrote another, expressing widespread admiration for Lewis’ decision to remain loyal to the team despite his personal conflicts.

Instead of sprinting past defenders, Lewis will support his teammates from the sidelines as Student Assistantembodies a different kind of heroism. His journey from outstanding wide receiver to cancer fighter is a testament to his resilience and determination. And although the football field will miss his spectacular plays for the time being, there is no doubt that Chris Lewis’ toughest and most inspiring performance takes place off the field.

We hope 2025 comes, not only as a symbol of perseverance, but as a reminder of the indomitable spirit that defines the true greats of college football. Keep fighting, Chris. The best is yet to come.
