SAN JOSE – A 24-year-old inmate at San Jose’s main prison died in hospital July 10, five days after he was found unconscious in his cell, authorities said.
On July 5, the man was arrested and charged with “two counts of robbery, possession of a loaded firearm, various other offenses and several outstanding warrants,” Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff Felicia Segura said in a press release.
The coroner determined that the man had committed suicide.
“Deputies and medical personnel immediately performed life-saving measures on him by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation until medical personnel arrived,” Segura said. He died after several days in hospital care.
The death was the seventh death this year that occurred in county custody.
